2020 Domaine Saint-Cyr La Galoche Pet Nat

The 2020 Domaine Saint-Cyr La Galoche Pet Nat This is a Gamay rosé pét-nat. And maybe one of the tastiest, value for money sparklings on the market! The vines are 20-40 years old, grown on clay and limestone. These grapes were purchased from Raphaël's brother in law. Direct press, then ferment begins in tank. Bottled and left on the lees for just over 4 months and then disgorged. Zero SO2. ~10gm/L residual sugar. This is some sexy wine, after all 'La Galoche' does mean 'French kiss.'

Raphaël Saint-Cyr, is a 4th generation grower, working the vines planted by his Great Grandfather some 70 odd years ago.

Raphaël took the reins from his uncle back in 2008, and immediately began converting all vineyards to organic. Both his uncle and grandfather had become sick – Raphaël was convinced it was from all the chemicals that were being used, and so he was determined to make the switch. In 2012 he received organic certification from Ecocert. These days they are currently converting to biodynamics as well. Raphaël has seen the growers around him change their perspective over the years – at first they told him he didn’t know what he was doing – they then saw how healthy his vineyards and grapes were, especially in more trying weather conditions – and are finally now starting to make the switch themselves. A very slow but positive change for the area.

What is natural wine?

The philosophy of natural wine is one of minimal-intervention, from vineyard to cellar. Natural wines are made using quality grapes, generally grown using organic and biodynamic practices, however vineyards may not always be certified as such due to the restrictive nature of these certification systems. Natural wines in most cases won't be filtered or fined, processes which generally involve the use of animal products.

Are your wines vegan friendly?

In almost all cases yes! Generally if you see "unfiltered and unfined" this will be an assurance that no animal products have been used in the process. The fining process is where conventional winemakers will often use egg and fish products (yep pretty gross) to remove sediment from wines. The sediment is natural, healthy and adds flavour so natural wine makers almost always leave some of it in.

Are your wines chemical free?

Yes, we only stock wines that use grapes grown using biodynamic or organic farming methods and will have none of the over 200 additives that can be found in conventional wines, *with the occasional exception of a tiny amount of sulphur. Some organic winemakers choose to add a small amount of sulphur (SO2) to ensure their wines travel better and last longer.
