2019 Wittmann '100 Hügel' Riesling
When people talk about Riesling in the Rheinhessen, what they are really talking about is are two men who define the region. One of these men is Philipp Wittmann, who for the past ten years has been producing the best biodynamic wine in the region.
This is a much more approachable bottling than the estate's rightly famous grand cru wines from the vineyards of Morstein, Brunnenhäuschen, Kirchspiel and Aulerde. The '100 Hills' Riesling (the terroir of Rheinhessen isn't nearly as steep as Mosel for instance) is an amazing every day Riesling. It is juicy-fresh, with an animating acidity and a fine minerality. Like all the best Riesling, it is elegant with an invigorating freshness. It tastes of grapefruit and peach and the soil of the vineyard.
