2019 Gut Oggau 'Winifred' Magnum
The Gut Oggau winery, helmed by Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselbock, produces magnificent, esoteric and ultimately collectible wines. Taking time to restore an abandoned vineyard in the Burgenland, they have converted their entire estate to biodynamics. Each cuvee label has been designed by artist Jung Von Matt, featuring a fictional family member’s face. The face is meant to represent the personality of the wine inside. They range from young, electric, jovial, to complex, age-worthy and thought provoking.
Always the most sought after of the Gut Oggau collection, the Winifred rose is as alluring as the face that stares strikingly from the bottle. The fruit comes from 35-year-old Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt vines that were planted on gravel. The grapes are destemmed and pressed directly into neutral large format Austrian oak barrels. It is fuchsia in colour, like a blushing cheek. Tastes like blush too, fresh red fruits, cherry tomatoes, alpine herbs, glittery texture. It’s a truly delicious wine, in all sense of the word.
