2020 William Downie Manilla Pinot Noir
William Downie has been making pinot noir under his eponymous William Downie label since 2003. While his patch of vines is no more than 5km north of Millstream, and at similar elevation, it produces a very different kind of wine. Planted in 1983, it shows slightly less fruit intensity than its nearest neighbouring vines. The red volcanic soils face slightly south and look more in the direction of the Tarago reservoir. These vines grow a lush green canopy.
The wine is very light in colour but shows intense strawberry as well as rhubarb and watermelon. There is a feeling of sweetness that adds weight and texture without losing definition and purity. This wine makes us think of a shady spot on a warm spring day.
And the bottle artwork is by none other than the legendary Australian artist Reg Mombassa no less.
