2019 Pantom 'Merlo Grigio'
After a string of challenging vintages – one including 44 days of consecutive rain leading up to harvest – Gianfranco, from Sardinia's Panevino, needed a little bit of help. The natural wine legend called his Australian importer, Giorgio De Maria and hopped on a plane to Australia. Helped by Anton Von Klopper of Lucy Margaux and Tom Shobbrook, he set about making a trio of wines in South Australia, which would go on to be named Pantom.
This is the most straightforward of the Pantom wines, but also the one that most tastes like Panevino. It's red as are almost all of Gianmarco's wines. But it also has the same nervy, energetic character as his Sardinian Cannanou. It's a 50-50 blend of Merlot and Pinot Grigio from Magpie Springs that's simply destemmed , co-fermented, and aged in tonneau. But it still tastes unlike anything else from the region.
