2019 Gut Oggau Timotheous Magnum
The Gut Oggau winery, helmed by Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselbock, produces magnificent, esoteric and ultimately collectible wines. Taking time to restore an abandoned vineyard in the Burgenland, they have converted their entire estate to biodynamics. Each cuvee label has been designed by artist Jung Von Matt, featuring a fictional family member’s face. The face is meant to represent the personality of the wine inside. They range from young, electric, jovial, to complex, age-worthy and thought provoking.
Timotheus is the son of Mechthild and Bertholdi. He is an impressive wine, bold, encapsulating and powerful. The vineyard is almost regal, tall, healthy vines. Despite this wine taking a more serious direction, it can win anyone over. Gruner Veltliner and Weissburgunder, a year on lees with no stirring. Immensely textural and full of walnut skin, meadowsweet and preserved lemon. Needs a lot of air but boy does it sing!
