2019 Gut Oggau 'Maskerade' Red – 1 Litre
The Gut Oggau winery, helmed by Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselbock, produces magnificent, esoteric and ultimately collectible wines. Taking time to restore an abandoned vineyard in the Burgenland, they have converted their entire estate to biodynamics. Each cuvee label has been designed by artist Jung Von Matt, featuring a fictional family member’s face. The face is meant to represent the personality of the wine inside. They range from young, electric, jovial, to complex, age-worthy and thought provoking.
The Maskerade collection are from parcels that have been bought most recently by the couple. They are in the process of converting the vineyard to biodynamic production, so they do not believe they show the true personality of the place yet, hence the mask on the character. They are secretive about these wines as they are not sold on their final form, but we can assume that the thirty year old vines of Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt are used. It is a little more raw around the edges than the other Gut Oggau wines, but still ripe and refreshing. Like biting into a crisp red apple.
