2018 Domaine Matassa ‘Brutal Orange’ Magnum
It’s difficult to overstate how influential Matassa’s Tom Lubbe has been in southern France’s natural wine movement – especially as a New Zealander so far from home.
Lubbe works with Catalan varieties – in this case Macabeu – usually from very old plots, planted on schist and marl. Viticulture is always organic and sometimes biodynamic.
The Brutal orange is skin contact Macabeu made (like all Brutal wines) with zero additions, zero subtractions and zero respect for convention. Like all of Matassa’s wines from the past few years, alcohol is low, but the flavour is intense and complex.
