2018 La Grapperie Adonis Pineau d’Aunis

Renaud Guettier is based in the Coteaux-du-Loir, just north of Tours. He is somewhat of a hermit, the only person in the area to have vineyards, the rest dedicated to cereals and seasonals. He works with classic Loire fruit, Chenin Blanc, Gamay, Grolleau, but also the highly sought after Pineau d’Aunis.

He planted some of his vines in the early 2000’s but when he started looking after the area he found abandoned vines that were over 100 years old, untouched by phylloxera! He farms organically and in order to remain financially sustainable, also farms over 100 hectares of rapeseed and soys, the vines being and remaining his artisanal passion.

The wines are something ethereal in nature, Renaud favours slow, cool ferments and long periods of ageing, manifesting in wonderfully complex and powerful wines. They are all made without additions or much management, showing the true nature of the site. It’s not often you can have one maker in one region making a small amount of wines; this is something special.

The Adonis is a powerful wine, much as the name suggests. 100% Pineau d’Aunis, a grape that has come into much favour in the natural wine world’s palate, exhibiting deep, brambly, purple fruits, tree bark, tomato leaf, crushed petals, woodfire. Finishing long and strong with a full mouthfeel, this is a wine to impress people at the table.
