2017 La Cave des Nomades ‘Vagamonde’ Grenache Blend
More than an expression of grape, soil or place, La Cave des Nomades encompasses a fictional universe where each wine tells a story: 'It comes from a constant need to travel. I always felt the need to move from place to place. So when I decided to stay in Banyuls, I needed my imagination to travel. So the cellar is home, but from there I can go wherever my inspiration takes me,’ says Cave des Nomades vigneron José Carvalho.
But they also do express a place, and that place is Banyuls in France’s Roussillon region. And the grapes grown there are Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. The Vagamonde is from a single parcel with an average vine age of about 60 years, with fermentation and elevage in tank. This cuvée is quite magnificent. The red fruit is crystal clear in the mid palate and the minerality sits wonderfully with the earthy Mourvèdre fruit. The buoyancy from the schist is a seriously defining feature of this cuvee. A rare diamond.
