2018 Jean Foillard 'Côte du Py' Gamay
Foillard. The very name conjures up the essence of Beaujolais itself, well Morgon at least, where Jean took over from his father in 1980 and has since become the benchmark for the appellation - dark, serious wines, well worth the endless recognition they receive the world over.
Côte du Py is the O.G. wine of Foillard, the one he made his name with. The name itself refers to an entire hill, but the plot that Foillard holds is arguably the very best section. This is a big, rich vintage in Morgon, giving the wine a rich, ripe, almost Southern Rhône-like decadence. Beautifully balanced, even if it is on the fleshier side.
