2018 Gut Oggau 'Bertholdi' Blaufrankisch
The Gut Oggau winery, helmed by Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselbock, produces magnificent, esoteric and ultimately collectible wines. Taking time to restore an abandoned vineyard in the Burgenland, they have converted their entire estate to biodynamics. Each cuvee label has been designed by artist Jung Von Matt, featuring a fictional family member’s face. The face is meant to represent the personality of the wine inside. They range from young, electric, jovial, to complex, age-worthy and thought provoking.
This wine comes from their oldest Blaufrankisch vines, over sixty years old, planted on limestone and slate. This is the grandfather of all the wines, and despite being old and serious and a “true Burgenlander”, the wine unravels into something modern and beguiling. It is the king of the collection, and shows the couples mastery of winemaking but also their innate ability to care for vines that produce fruit unparalleled in quality across Austria.
