2017 Maison Lapalus Cabernet Franc
Maison Lapalus is the most important of a series of projects by Beaujolais-born Gilles Lapalus. For this wine, the fruit comes from a vineyard near Bendigo planted in 1972, so some pretty serious old vine action. What’s really interesting here though is that for the past two years, the vineyard has been abandoned. So no pruning , no spraying, no irrigation.
Because of this, the vines were filled with tiny bunches with berries no bigger than blackcurrants. This gave amazing concentration without any perception of heaviness. It’s created a classic, old-world styled, light-bodied, herbal Cabernet Franc that wouldn’t be out of place in Samur. Bottling with no filtration and a small addition of sulfur.
