2016 Mas Coutelou Flambadou Magnum
Jeff Coutelou's father established the domaine in 1972 and it has been run organically since 1987, "before this type of production became fashionable”. Mas Coutelou is located in Puimisson, a commune in the Languedoc and to the east of Béziers. It's been a winemaking village for over 200 years and most of it's soils are a mix of red clays and limestone.
Today Jeff farms 14 hectares of vines, as well as a few hundred olive trees. His father planted the first vines back in 1966 and was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in the Hérault, when there were just seven organic wine growers in the entire department, today the estate is registered with 'Nature et Progrès'. Flambadou is pure Carignan and extremely attractive - it has a bright ruby/plum colour, a heady scent of vibrant dark fruits and spice and is very delicious and easy to enjoy.
This has the charm of Cru Beaujolais but the depth and richness of the Languedoc - serve it slightly chilled and ease into it during the Summer with anything grilled - it is a delight and for anyone who wonders why I am always going on about proper, old vine Languedoc Carignan, this is it. It's the real deal.
