2015 Michel Gahier 'La Fauquette' Melon le Queue Rouge
Michel Gahier is based in Montigny-les-Arsures where his family have lived since 1525. It's often considered the best village in Jura for Trousseau and it also has the added bonus of housing the legendary Pope of the Jura. The now retired Jacques Puffeney lives next door to Gahier and his influence can be seen in the purity and detail of the wines, all of which are made from single parcels, all from organic fruit.
The barrel in which it matures is not topped up as with Gahier's other white cuvées. Instead, as the wine evaporates through the pores of the barrel a thin veil (voile) of yeast forms on the surface of the wine and this protects the wine from excessive oxidation. The oxygen that does penetrate the veil causes it to develop an exciting nutty spiciness that is incredibly appealing. This is the classic white from these guys, in our opinion.
