2015 Jean-Claude Lapalu Alma Mater
Jean-Claude Lapalu is among the most respected growers in Beaujolais and a leader in the natural wine movement. He came into being a bit later than the original Gang of Four and so his wines could be described as a bit more extreme than say Foillard or Métras.
He farms the same vines that were once farmed by his father and grandfather organically and makes his wines without the use of any additions including sulphur, in this Alma Mater bottling at least.
The Alma Mater is an outlier in his production, with fermentation and elevate taking place in clay amphora for seven months. It is one of the darkest, most extracted and most exciting Beaujolais out there with dark cherry and mineral flavours and a supple but firm structure.
