2010 La Stoppa 'Barbera della Stoppa' Barbera
La Stoppa is a notable property in Emilia-Romagna originally set up in the late 19th century by a lawyer obsessed with the idea of imitating the wines of Bordeaux. Current proprietor Elena Pantaleoni's family took on the estate in the 1970s and have been slowly weeding out international varieties and bringing in a more hands off approach to winemaking ever since.
For the uninitiated, Emilian Barbera is often a more savoury, friery affair. La Stoppa release their rich, structured Barbera only after extended bottle ageing in their cellar allowing the youthful, ripe fruit to give way and the more meaty, feral characters of the wine the chance to shine.
