NV Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Blanc de Blancs

$112

The name here refers to the vertical nature of the geographic locations of the vineyards as well as the style of wine resulting from the very chalky soils of these sites i.e., a more linear, mineral style of wine. To be specific, the vineyards are located in Cramant, Avize, Oger, and Vertus (north of the village). While Larmandier's Latitude is expansive across the palate, the Longitude is all about minerality, line and raciness. This is again 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay, yet the vineyards from which it is drawn have top soils that are much thinner and the vine's roots plunge straight into the chalky bedrock. Simply superb Blanc de Blancs, and a prestige cuvée by any other name. The current bottling is the 2016 base with 35-40% reserve wines going back to 2004.

"Scents of just ripe stone fruit, talc, faint honey and toast, a light caramel note too, all adding up to quite subtle and pretty. Creaminess in texture with very fine bead, vivacious and fresh-tasting with lovely salty-chalky feel very present through the wine and to the powdery, lightly puckering finish. Vinous in a way, gently savoury throughout, exceptionally long and runs with so much energy. Beautiful."

FAQ

What is natural wine?

The philosophy of natural wine is one of minimal-intervention, from vineyard to cellar. Natural wines are made using quality grapes, generally grown using organic and biodynamic practices, however vineyards may not always be certified as such due to the restrictive nature of these certification systems. Natural wines in most cases won't be filtered or fined, processes which generally involve the use of animal products.

Are your wines vegan friendly?

In almost all cases yes! Generally if you see "unfiltered and unfined" this will be an assurance that no animal products have been used in the process. The fining process is where conventional winemakers will often use egg and fish products (yep pretty gross) to remove sediment from wines. The sediment is natural, healthy and adds flavour so natural wine makers almost always leave some of it in.

Are your wines chemical free?

Yes, we only stock wines that use grapes grown using biodynamic or organic farming methods and will have none of the over 200 additives that can be found in conventional wines, *with the occasional exception of a tiny amount of sulphur. Some organic winemakers choose to add a small amount of sulphur (SO2) to ensure their wines travel better and last longer.
