2019 Georges Descombes Régnié

$53

The 2019 Georges Descombes Régnié is a fruitier, young-drinking wine. Elegant, floral, and full of exuberant Gamay fruit, this is a bottle you could easily to chill a tad and drink with a little contemplation on a warm summer evening.

The fruit is sweet and juicy with a silky and slippery palate. It takes the more serious tones of cru Beaujolais and makes it highly sessionable too.

Georges Descombes is the unofficial 5th member of the famed ‘Gang of Four’ (Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Guy Breton) who shook things up in the late eighties by returning to the old practices of viticulture and vinification.

As soon as Georges took over the estate from his father in the late eighties he immediately started shifting viticultural and oenological practices forward. In the winery, he uses very little (or no) sulphur and eschews filtration. Where his style differs from his peers is that he leaves the must to undergo cold carbonic maceration for a whole 30 days. He then ages his wines for around a year (in barrels for the Vieilles Vignes) prior to bottling. Further extended ageing in bottle helps these natural wines to stabilise and develop. The resulting wines are amazingly fresh and mineral whilst having the structure to age.

FAQ

What is natural wine?

The philosophy of natural wine is one of minimal-intervention, from vineyard to cellar. Natural wines are made using quality grapes, generally grown using organic and biodynamic practices, however vineyards may not always be certified as such due to the restrictive nature of these certification systems. Natural wines in most cases won't be filtered or fined, processes which generally involve the use of animal products.

Are your wines vegan friendly?

In almost all cases yes! Generally if you see "unfiltered and unfined" this will be an assurance that no animal products have been used in the process. The fining process is where conventional winemakers will often use egg and fish products (yep pretty gross) to remove sediment from wines. The sediment is natural, healthy and adds flavour so natural wine makers almost always leave some of it in.

Are your wines chemical free?

Yes, we only stock wines that use grapes grown using biodynamic or organic farming methods and will have none of the over 200 additives that can be found in conventional wines, *with the occasional exception of a tiny amount of sulphur. Some organic winemakers choose to add a small amount of sulphur (SO2) to ensure their wines travel better and last longer.
